Nigerian soldier on peace mission killed in Sudan

A Nigerian soldier on peacekeeping mission with the African Union–United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, UNAMID, was on Wednesday reported killed by an unidentified group in a carjacking incident in Nyala, South Darfur State in Sudan.

The identity of the soldier was not immediately disclosed.

Reacting to the incident in a statement on Thursday, UNAMID condemned the attack, stressing that it was a violation of international law.

The Mission said it has reported the incident to the relevant Sudanese authorities and demanded that the Government of Sudan swiftly apprehends the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

UNAMID also sent messages of condolences to the family of the late peacekeeper, his colleagues, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
