Jay-Z’s mum comes out as lesbian in poignant track on rapper’s new 4:44 album

Jay-Z got really raw and personal on his new album 4:44, an album that saw him finally address those cheating rumours and practically own up to being unfaithful.

However, the body of work goes even deeper on a track called Smile, which sees the 47-year-old open up about his mum’s sexuality.

The album, which was exclusively released on Tidal, reveals how Jay-Z’s mum Gloria Carter struggled to live a double life, one that wasn’t her true self thanks to societies discriminatory standards.

The poignant lyrics read: ‘Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian, had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian.

‘Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate. Society shame and the pain was too much to take. Cried tears of joy when you fell in love. Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her. I just want to see you smile through all the hate.’

The dad-of-three then turned hopeful as he pleaded with his mum to be free and sweetly requested for her to ‘love who you love.’

He continued: ‘Living in the shadow. Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free, because that’s what you want them to see. Living two lives, happy, but not free.

‘The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free, but you live with the fear of just being me. Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be.

‘No harm for them, no harm for me. But life is short, and it’s time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed. Smile.’

As well as blessing the world with some new music, the Smile rapper and Beyonce recently welcomed twins into the world and according to new reports, the Carter babies have been taken home as the family stay in a lavish £314,000-a-month rental home in Malibu.
