The week the city of Manchester was rocked to its foundation by the
worst terrorist attack in the United Kingdom since the 7/7 bombings in
2007. At approximately 22.33 at the Manchester Arena, at the end of a
live performance by Ariana Grande as part of her Dangerous Woman tour, a
22-year-old radical Islamist and Mancunian native named Salman Abedi
detonated a homemade explosive device in a crowd in the foyer of the
venue.
As a result of the explosion, 23 people (including
the terrorist) lost their lives, while a further 59 were left critically
injured. Most tragic of all was the fact that many of the people killed
and wounded in the attack were children and adolescents; fans of Grande
who wanted to see their idol live and paid the ultimate price for their
aspirations.
Several
of these unfortunate victims have since been identified, although
several people remain missing. Among them was a little girl,
eight-year-old Saffie Rose Roussos, who died at the scene as a result of
shrapnel. Furthermore, an ambulance official says 12 children under the
age of 16 were among 59 injured in the attack as people left a pop
concert.Another victim was 15-year-old Olivia Campbell, a
teenager who went missing not long after the devastating incident, and
whose parents immediately launched an appeal to find her. Sadly, it
transpired that Campbell had also perished in the bombing. As if that
wasn’t upsetting enough, her boyfriend Lewis has shared the last text
message she sent him on social media, sent just minutes before her
death.
Campbell’s
boyfriend Lewis Brierley shared the message that teen from Bury,
Greater Manchester sent him on the night of the incident. In an
emotional Facebook post, Brierly wrote: “Words can’t describe how happy I
am that she was in my life. My heart aches when I see her face it aches
not knowing, not knowing what we could have been as couple, not knowing
what she could have achieved in her life. Me and Olivia haven’t been
together long but we found the time to see each other every day. We
found real love with each other.”He added, “The English
language doesn’t have the words for the mass heartbreak all across the
country for everyone involved … I pray for all of the families of the
casualties. May you find peace with your loved ones. I love you Olivia
and I will never forget you as long as I live.”
Olivia’s
mother Charlotte paid tribute to her daughter in an Instagram post, and
broke down in tears during a vigil held for her lost child. She
tearfully stated “I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for us,
for being here, for giving us your support, for sharing her everywhere.”
