Teenage Times Square victim named as Alyssa Elsman from Michigan


An 18-year-old girl was killed and her younger sister injured when the out-of-control, wrong way driver ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians on the sidewalk in the heart of Times Square Thursday, police officials said.
The New York Post reports that Michigan tourist Alyssa Elsman was visiting the Big Apple with her family, including her 13-year-year sister, when the speeding car, driven by Richard Rojas, 26, slammed into them and nearly two dozen others as he floored it up to West 45th Street just before noon (about 2am AEST).

Car hits pedestrians in New York's Times Square

At least 19 people have been injured and one is dead after a speeding car struck pedestrians in New York City's Times Square.

A witness told Reuters news agency they saw seven people being loaded onto stretchers, shoes scattered around the scene and one person covered in a bloodstained blanket.

An injured pedestrian told Reuters the driver's actions appeared to have been "intentional".

Two soldiers injured as female suicide bomber attacks military checkpoint

At least two soldiers were injured on Wednesday when a female suicide bomber attacked a military post located behind a camp for internally displaced persons in Konduga town of Borno State, police said.

The attack occurred at about 7.30 a.m. when the bomber crept on the unsuspecting soldiers.

Konduga is about 35 kilometres away from Maiduguri. It is among the few local government headquarters that have been repeatedly attacked but had never been seized by the Boko Haram.
